From three barrels in 2012, marine scientists Gareth and Rainbo Belton have grown to 8 hectares, five staff and between 6 and 7 thousand cases of wines. All vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically with absolutely no additions in the cellar, save for small doses of sulphur. There is much technique employed here, including the services of one of the country’s preeminent viticulturalists Dr Dylan Grigg (who grows and makes one of South Australia’s best grenaches under the label Vinya Velha).

Great fruit from some of Adelaide Hills’ best sites is crafted into some of the most beautiful and soulful wines from anywhere. In terms of technique nothing is off the table in their quest for making remarkable wines. Oak from various sources, sizes and ages, whole berry, whole clusters, warm ferments, cool ferments, solids and lees. Whatever it takes, within the parameters of minimal handling, and as natural as possible so as to tease out flavour and site expression.

There aren’t too many wine names that hint at what you might find in the bottle. There is certainly a gentleness of presence, texture and drinkability with the wine’s of Gentle Folk. Pure fruit, supple silken textures, bright acidity, but folded in and not a feature in itself, soft tannins and a savoury tension, snapping the palate into moreish seriousness. Playful wines have never demanded more respect.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      SHOP Gentle Folk Wines
