Joshua Cooper Pinot Noir 2024

$50.00

The Early Release wines of Josh Cooper are obviously less expensive and are supposedly an introduction to the range. The pinot noir however, along with all the range, is pretty darn serious stuff, in this case coming off the fabled Doug’s vineyard. Lovely aromatics, pretty, floral, with raspberry, rhubarb, poached plum, tangy redcurrant, blood orange and Asian spice. Slippery and silky, medium bodied, but with a flavour intensity that belies its colour and weight. Wonderfully pure, the mid palate all fleshy and lithe. Lovely energy, very fine, and tannins that grip and carry – pretty serious indeed. Wonderful wine. Norris at Waters Wine Co

Produced in much the same style as our well known ‘Doug’s Vineyard’ cuveé, though hailing from the exposed granite soils of Dash Farm. Bright ruby red, and immediately inviting, black raspberry, red cherry, exotic spices and woody herb aromatics fill the glass, with a subtle flinty, smokey complexity. The palate as is usual for our style is full of red fruit and spicy complexity, structured by fresh acid and fine, powdery tannins which lend plenty of seriousness to this early release wine. Open and appealing at present, this Pinot Noir will also reward medium term cellaring with additional complexity and nuance. A wonderful weekday wine, or introduction to our style. Josh Cooper

Producer Profile

Josh Cooper is the son of Nelly and Allan Cooper of Cobaw Ridge winery in the Macedon Ranges, a producer of incomparable regard. Interestingly, Josh sources his fruit from outside the family farm, but growing up in the Macedon Ranges he has an intimate knowledge of the region, its vineyards and growers. We have not yet come across a finer suite of negociant wines in Australia.

Bright, pure, translucent, textural, delicate and poised, with a long and lingering carry. Layered complexity, flavours and textures interwoven, seamlessly stitched, the balance is perfect, no flavour or texture dominating, an equality of components.

Beautiful flavours are one thing, but what elevates Josh Cooper’s wines into grandness is their texture, shape and tannin. Billowing, eddying – their shape all movement, pirouetting, rippling, and caressing. No wine feels as another, but they all share a gentle palate presence, a pelt of velvet, silk or longer woodier tannins.
