Chateau de Terrefort Lescalle 2020

$28.00

Chateau de Terrefort Lescalle is in the commune of Macau, next to its more famous neighbor, Margaux. Like Margaux, the soils and environs are similar, as is the varietal mix, in this case 80% merlot, 10% cabernet sauvignon and 10% cabernet franc. The wine saw no oak whatsoever, and it’s rich, with delectable freshness and vibrancy. Juicy, tensioned by minerals, with a mix of dark and red fruits, violets and tobacco. Really quite firm and serious, puckering, and wonderful with food. We served this with whole rump cap cooked slowly over hot coals, and it matched perfectly. What a bargain! The fruit is destemmed and fermented in a mix of stainless steel and concrete tanks. Extraction is via pump-overs once or twice a day during ferment (typically 3 to 4 weeks), followed by 12 months maturation in tank.

Château Lescalle was built in 1875 by Emmanuel Tessandier, who later became the Mayor of Macau from 1876 to 1880. The vineyard is planted on ‘palus’, the alluvial sandy clay found next to the river. It is only 200 metres from the Haut-Medoc appellation and just 3 minutes from Margaux.

Producer Profile

Imperious Latour. Many have described Chateau Latour as the greatest vineyard in the world and under the current direction of Frederic Engerer and owner Francois Pinault there is a determination to make the greatest wine possible. Chateau Latour no longer sells their wines en primeur, choosing to wait until they are deemed ready. Three wines are produced here and amongst the First Growths, this is perhaps the grandest and most consistent line up. The Grand Vin makes up roughly a third of production, the ‘second’ wine, Les Forts de Latour, a little more and the ‘third’ wine, Pauillac de Latour, roughly a quarter.

It is important to note that the second and third wines are not baby Latours. They are individual wines in their own right, coming from different parts of the vineyard to the Grand Vin and possessing a different varietal makeup. Latour has been groundbreaking in this insistence, not wishing to yield the quality of the Grand Vin and not making a fetish of the estate’s style either. Forts and Pauillac de Latour are wonderful wines, the incomparable quality of the estate an iron-fisted gauntlet of pleasure.
