Syrah isn’t exactly the varietal that comes to mind when you think of the Yarra Valley, but in the past 12 months some of my favourite wines from anywhere have been Yarra Valley Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. More generous than I’d expected, plusher and the whole bunches play their part, but not overly so. Extremely complex, a compote of red and black fruits, sweet and savoury spice, lavender, violet, geranium, compost and cured meats. Pure mouthfeel, slightly slippery, firming up with mineral, chalky tannins. A feeling of total balance and the threads of the highest quality woven neatly, but pulled not too tight. Absolutely stunning. Waters Wine Co

Bicknell FC is the label of Nicky Harris and David Bicknell, chief winemaker at Oakridge. David Bicknell is one of Australia’s greatest winemakers and we have had many a superb cellared bottle contest between Oakridge and Bicknell FC.
All the fruit is from a close planted vineyard at Gladysdale, planted in 1988. This is an exceptionally cool site, perfect for making fresh, intense and vivid wines. You could not have hoped for a better spot in the Upper Yarra. The site has great diurnal range, warm days and cool nights, and despite the elevation is able to consistently produce full flavoured and fleshy wines due to its rich volcanic soil. Tiny quantities only, with 1.Ha of Chardonnay and 1.5ha of Pinot Noir, with a few hundred dozen made in any given vintage.
Winemaking is simple and classic. Wild unhurried cool ferments, absolutely no additions apart from small quantities of sulphur, ageing in used wood and for the reds, minimal punchdowns. Casks are rigorously topped up and the maturing process is kept short, retaining freshness and a certain structural angularity so well suited to Yarra Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
With fruit sourced from Greenock, Marananga and Moppa, Jack’s Shiraz has a lot to offer for those that seek a classically styled Barossa shiraz at a sharp price point. Abundant plum and dark cherry fruits, baking spices, licorice, dark chocolate and earth. Tight, fine tannin support and a deep, savoury resonance to its tail. 91 […]
Add to cart Producer: Laughing JackVery deep colour and remarkably vivid considering the presumably long period in wood. There is bright purple towards the rim, fading from the deep blackness of the core, suggesting the inclusion of whole bunches. Intense aromatics, florals, black fruits, sweet and savoury spice. It’s not overly complex at present but the flavours are utterly captivating […]
Add to cart Producer: Standish Wine CoSourced from 22-year-old vines on the lower end of the east-north-east slope, the Crudo bottling channels all the vivid, savoury Rhône-like appeal Luke searches for while delivering plenty of delicious, drink-me-now appeal. This year, just 10% bunches were included in the ferment to avoid overcrowding the spicy blueberry flavours and fine, granite-derived tannins, and the […]
Add to cart Producer: Lambert WinesThe 2022 The Relic Shiraz-Viognier contains 2% Viognier skins, and this addition presents in this vintage as a core of raspberry and pomegranate. It is pure fruited and powerfully aromatic, as this cuvee always is. Interestingly, I am tasting this wine from two different glasses: one opened two days ago, one opened this morning. They […]
