Mercer Hunter Valley Chardonnay 2023

$20.00

The best place in Australia, for rich, round, easy going chardonnay is the Hunter Valley. These wines can age too, a couple of bottles of 2003, from a good vineyard will testify. At 21 years of age, both bottles were delicious and had at least another terrific five years. The 23 Mercer is a knockout, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this goes a good twenty years. Rich, succulent and round with citrus and orchard fruits, cream, cashew and tangy acidity. Gorgeous bargain. Waters Wine Co

The powerful, concentrated flavours, built around a defined core of acidity, set this wine apart. The palate is distinctly citrusy with lemon and grapefruit flavours, highlighting its Upper Hunter Valley origin with fruit from the Glenesk vineyard. Barrel fermentation of unclarified juice has introduced a subtle yet appropriate oak influence, with only seasoned barrels used. It offers freshness, flavour, and finesse. Amazing value. 93 Points, Halliday Wine Companion

Producer Profile

It is every Hunter Valley wine lover’s labour and curse to preach of its glories and delights. Whenever I happen to write of the Hunter Valley, I find it impossible not to mention the indifference of most Australian wine drinkers. Ah well, let’s keep on keeping on. Aaron Mercer has been a fixture in the Hunter Valley for twenty years, making wines with Tyrrell’s, Tamburlaine, Brokenwood and a great many small producers as a contract winemaker. He’s also in partnership with wine wholesaler Andrew Jamieson and Ned Goodwin MW with their label, Maker Master Merchant – one of the best value range of wines in Australia.

The Mercer fruit is sourced from the Central Ranges, Orange, Tumbarumba, Hilltops and most importantly the Hunter Valley. His entry level varietal range is deliciously fresh, vibrant, tangy and fruit driven, not to mention its status as a bargain. The Limited Release range is small batch, from some of the very best vineyards in NSW. These are regionally defining wines; rich, sumptuous and sensual.
